Sharon and I have made so many friends thanks to the NuWa Owner's Forum. Gary is one of the "Three Amigos" that started up and administer the forum. He and his wife, Karen, are two examples of the wonderful people we have met and we jumped at the chance to camp with them here at South Beach State Park that is just south of Newport, OR. That is their rig on the left.
Must mention their yellow lab, Abby, who is a major part of their family and if you are with the Thurmans, you are with Abby. I've never seen such successful training in my life. Each command is met immediately with the correct behavior. She has those two so well trained it is a wonder to observe. She does what Karen calls a brain bore and eventually gets her way. She chased that stick and then lay in the ocean to cool off. They introduced us to Nye Beach which we knew nothing about because we always concentrated our Newport visits to Mo's for chowder and the Oregon Coast Aquarium that is on the other side of the highway by the marina. Nye Beach has some good restaurants, interesting shops and very easy access to the beach to walk off the chowder consumed at the Chowder Bowl - might be better chowder than what we've had at Mo's and our friends raved about the bread pudding.

Sharon got to add another lighthouse to her life list of lighthouses we have visited. This one is unique because the structure includes the lightkeeper's quarters and the light tower in the same building. It was only active from 1871 - 1874 and would have been lost except for the efforts of local citizens that didn't want it destroyed.
How often do you suppose the light keepers had to walk up these stairs? Their photos make you think they were pretty fit but then, most everybody was back in the 1870s.
Some of the prettiest bridges we have encountered in our travels are on US-101 and this one at Newport is no exception. Others that come to mind are at Gold Beach and Florence.
We have visited the Oregon Coast Acquarium a number of times and overlooked the Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center that is also down by the marina and a great place to visit. Here, we really enjoyed the couple hours we spent walking at all the exhibits and actually touching live marine things.

ReplyDeleteThanks again for the great company and fun times together. And you are right... Karen and I are trained very well by Abby! :-) Can't wait to see you both at the G & G Rally in June... and next year again when you pass through the area.
